iSushi

isushi4365 Convoy St., yelp reviews

iSushi is a medium-sized sushi bar and diner, serving the usual variety of sashimi and novelty rolls plus some Japanese diner dishes like teriyaki and katsu.  Until recently it was called Walmido and served some Korean dishes as well; though all the kimchi and sundubu are gone now, I couldn’t help noticing that the menu is still in Korean (not Japanese).  This would be weird anywhere but Convoy Street, where it’s closer to the norm.

I can’t say we tried everything, or even a decent sampling.  We got a seaweed salad and a roll called “El Fuego” with raw jalapeño and spicy ketchup – both items more or less like the one’s you’d expect on every other block of University Ave., west of the 805.  We got a more exciting roll called a “Lemon Drop”, which added thin slices of lemon and ponzu sauce to the standard stuffing of spicy mayo tuna, cuke, and avocado.  And we ordered edamame slathered in a spicy garlic sauce – a distinctly Korean tasting sauce, I might add – which was good yummy protein-y bar food.

What we didn’t try were any of the fried center-plate proteins or the classier simple sushi items.  But I’d guess  – pure conjecture – that they’re so-so, no better or worse than the many other sushi places much closer to my house.  If you’re after perfect, hallowed traditional sushi, you probably ought to go across the street to Sushi Dokoro and throw down your wallet.  Nothing wrong with this place though, and a good meal I don’t regret.  But I didn’t leave inspired.
