Yakitori Yakyudori & Ramen

yakyudori4898 Convoy St., yelp reviews

In the lot it shares with Starbucks and Dixieline, YY&R looks from the outside like a cheap foodcourt chain, but the inside and the menu are cozily traditional.  Unfortunately the yakitori (quirky skewers) part of the menu is only available at night, so we stuck to the menu of lunch combos and ramens.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say this was the best ramen we’ve had so far on the Recon.  And strangely, I think the actual ramen noodles at other places have been better – more al dente, less like the top ramen I learned to detest in college – but the broths here were better tasting and the other ingredients, like soft-boiled eggs and ham and chives, were excellent.  We tried a few other goodies besides the ramen: a fried pork and rice bowl (delish!), raw octopus with wasabi (slimy and yummy), and home-made donuts with a chocolate dipping sauce (also yum).  I ordered an alcoholic grapefruit drink which was like a trip into the innocent ’80s of Bartles and James.

At least at lunch, the prices are very reasonable, and I can safely say that everyone left the table happy as clams.  Put it on the list of Convoy Street Good’ns.
